Are you more likely to win with Mental Conditioning?

International Polo Academy’s Miranda Banks talks about the role of Mental conditioning in polo.
Miranda Banks is a leading sports psychologist with a background in the Australian Institute of Sport and working with elite athletes up to Olympic level, professional sports teams and as International Polo Academy’s Program Director and Chief Sports Psychologist.
Put simply: Can your team expect to win more if you have a Mental Conditioning coach?
You need to think about “what is the impact of mental conditioning training.. that’s the question..”
I like to call it the “Top 5 Percent”
If you are in a position where two teams are roughly equal: both teams have the same standard of horses, your fitness levels are equal and the level of player is equal, what is going to set your team apart is its Mental Resilience.
Your goal should be to take pressure away. Look at the way underdogs perform. They perform better because they have less pressure and expectation on them and the reason why they often win is this reason. It’s the classic situation: When you remove the pressure you have more chance of performing.
So its all about minimalizing the impact of pressure.
So, as I say, essentially it’s the final 5 Percent. What will set your team apart is mental resilience.
